Storms and gales are one of the leading causes of damage to property and infrastructure across the Highlands

Taking a few precautionary steps in advance can help reduce the risk to your home and surroundings.

Before strong winds

    •     Check your property is in good condition, repairing loose tiles or anything that could be dislodged
    •     Secure outdoor items such as garden furniture, bins, ladders, or trampolines
    •     Close and fasten all windows and doors properly
    •     Park vehicles away from buildings, trees, walls, and fences or in a garage if available
    •     Prepare for possible power cuts by keeping a torch, spare batteries, and a battery-powered radio nearby
    •     Keep phones and devices charged, and know how to access your utility shut-off points

During and after strong winds

    •     Stay indoors where possible
    •     If you do need to go outside, avoid walking close to buildings, walls, or trees
    •     Do not attempt repairs while conditions are still dangerous
    •     Avoid driving unless essential; if you must travel, take extra care on exposed roads and when passing high-sided vehicles
    •     Be aware that some routes, including bridges, may be closed or take longer than usual
    •     Keep well clear of any fallen or damaged power or telephone lines
