Plan Ahead
The likelihood of being caught up in a major emergency may be low, but it’s still important to think about taking steps towards being as ready as you can be, just in case.
While emergencies can’t always be prevented, planning ahead can greatly reduce their impact. Events such as severe weather, public health alerts, or security incidents can all affect communities across the Highlands. Taking simple steps now can make a real difference when it matters most.
Stay Calm
In Scotland, a coordinated approach is taken to emergency planning. Organisations including the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Police Scotland, NHS services, local authorities, government agencies, utility providers, and voluntary groups work together to prepare for and respond to emergencies. These are referred to as Emergency Liaison Groups or ELGs
All that said, preparedness is not just the responsibility of others! There are practical actions households, communities, businesses and organisations can take to improve resilience, reduce risk, and better protect themselves and those around them. Not forgetting pets!
Since 2022, UK policy has taken a “whole of society” approach recognising and voicing resilience is not just the role of emergency services, but something shared by individuals, communities and organisations.
